In Naples the first quantum computer in Italy, the revolution of Federico II

The first quantum computer in Italy is located right in Naples , in fact the University of Naples “Federico II” has started an important collaboration with the international company SEEQC which aims precisely at a quantum revolution.

Quantum computers are arriving in Naples , innovative tools that allow us to solve problems in a different way and with numerous computational advantages. The new computers exploit the laws of physics and quantum mechanics , the science that studies subatomic particles.

The sophisticated tools can solve a math problem in 200 seconds, compared to the 10.000 years expected by Google's proposed algorithm on a supercomputer. The computers will require specific conditions to operate, namely temperatures below -270 degrees Celsius.

This is precisely what is being worked on in the premises of the Physics Department of Federico II, to recreate an environment that is optimal for hosting the new instruments.

The words of the university professors

Professors from the Physics Department at the Federico II University of Naples say they are enthusiastic about the new project, which will aim to create a quantum computing hub in Naples.

It will be a unique machine in Italy and among the few present in Europe. The physics behind it is exciting and beautiful. The idea is to make it usable also for businesses and other fields of physics

Gennaro Miele , the director of the Physics department, also expressed his opinion on the issue:

We will host in our University a piece of equipment, the quantum computer, which is of a particular type. We start with a prototype that will then develop over the years. The interesting thing is that the technology on which it is based was developed here in Naples.

Furthermore, the University and the SEEQC company have organized a conference on May 10, 2023, at 14:00 PM at Villa Doria D'Angri to discuss this topic and all the opportunities it will open up for local companies. In short, this is a great achievement for our city in the field of scientific research.
