Alter Oculus by Franz Cerami. Immersive installation in the Church of Santa Croce in Naples
From January 1st to 21st 2025, the Church of Santa Croce and Purgatory al Mercato, in Naples, becomes the stage for “Alter Oculus”, an immersive installation conceived by the artist Franz Cerami. The initiative, promoted and financed by the Municipality of Naples as part of the exhibition “Other Christmases”, aims to transform the historic space of the church into a place of reflection and wonder through an innovative use of video mapping and digital arts.
The Alter Oculus Experience
“Alter Oculus” invites the viewer to reflect on the concept of look and transformation, both physically and symbolically. The ancient empty frames of the church, once custodians of paintings and stories, are illuminated by eleven dynamic projections, which create an unprecedented visual narrative. The dome ceiling becomes a majestic point of convergence between the real and the imaginary, evoking a connection between earth and sky.
Each visitor becomes an integral part of the work, crossing a space in which the visible and the invisible merge in a continuous dialogue. As stated by Dominique Lora, art historian, “Alter Oculus” represents a neo-Renaissance impetus in a contemporary key, where digital art redefines the relationship between the work, the spectator and the urban environment.
