Compared to 2024, Campania maintains the same number of municipalities, but drops to fourth place in the national ranking, overtaken by Calabria which rises to 23. The top positions remain Liguria (33), Apulia (27) and, precisely, Calabria. The Campania region is on equal terms with the Marche (20 Municipalities).

Among the new entries we would like to point out Sapri, while Capaccio-Paestum leaves the list. The most famous locations of the area remain rewarded Sorrento Coast and Cilento, areas that confirm their excellence both for the quality of the sea and for the efficiency of the services offered.

What criteria are needed to obtain the Blue Flag?

The recognition is based on a series of rigorous criteria, Including:

  • Bathing water quality, monitored through approximately 2.500 samples and 5.000 analyses every year by the Regional Agencies for Environmental Protection (ARPA);
  • Sustainable wastewater management and municipal waste;
  • Efficiency of tourism and environmental services, such as cycle paths, green areas, accessibility to beaches;
  • Environmental education and presence of information for swimmers.

As specified by the general director of Arpa Campania, Stephen Sorvino, the environmental data provided by the agencies enter directly into the FEE evaluation process. Arpa monitoring does not replace the Blue Flag, but supports it scientifically, ensuring coherence between health protection and enhancement of the territory.

The big excluded: what has changed for Capaccio Paestum, Ischia and Procida?

The assignment of the 2025 Blue Flags saw the exclusion of some important Campania locations, raising questions and discussions.

Capaccio Paestum, after ten consecutive years of recognition, is not among the awarded municipalities. According to the available information, the main cause would be a lack of documentation submitted, which prevented a complete evaluation of the required requirements. Although the water quality in some areas was judged excellent, the lack of procedural compliance compromised the awarding of the flag.

Ischia e Procida, two of the most iconic islands in the Gulf of Naples, continue to fail to obtain the Blue Flag. The main reasons lie in the lack of adequate purification plants, a key element in the FEE evaluation criteria. Despite their natural beauty and tourist importance, the lack of infrastructure for wastewater management represents a significant obstacle.
