Naples is bracing for the hottest day of the summer. For Thursday, August 6th, the Ministry of Health has issued a maximum heat alert, the so-called red alert, for all 27 cities included in the national monitoring system: an unprecedented occurrence since the heatwave surveillance system was established.
The list also includes the major cities of Southern Italy, from Palermo to Bari, passing through Reggio Calabria. The red dot is triggered when heat-related weather conditions can have negative health effects not only on the most vulnerable, but also on healthy people.
What does red dot mean?
The red dot is level 3, the highest on the Ministry of Health's alert scale. It indicates risk conditions for the entire population, with more serious effects for elderly, children e chronically ill.
As of Wednesday, August 5th, 25 out of 27 cities are on maximum alert: only Messina and Reggio Calabria remain at the lower level, the orange alert. On Thursday, however, the peak affects the entire network of monitored cities, an all-time record for the summer of 2026.
The forecast for Naples
A day of trouble is expected in Naples on Thursday full sun, with temperatures between 25 degrees at night and 34 degrees maximumThe high humidity, typical of August on the seafront, will make the heat feel even more intense, especially during the central hours of the day.
The heat will remain high into the evening, with lows struggling to drop below 25 degrees: tropical nights, with little relief for those without air conditioning.
The ministry's recommendations
To deal with the red dot, the Ministry of Health recommends some simple but important precautions:
- Avoid going out during the hottest hours, between 11am and 18pm.
- Drink plenty of water, even when you're not thirsty, and limit alcohol and caffeine.
- Prefer light meals rich in fruit and vegetables
- Never leave children or animals in the car, not even for a few minutes
- At home, use the air conditioning without lowering the temperature too much: the difference with the outside should not exceed 7 degrees
- Pay attention to elderly neighbors and lonely people, who may suffer from the heat without showing it immediately
Anyone taking medication should consult a doctor: extreme heat can alter their effects. If you feel unwell, contact emergency services immediately.
How long will the heat wave last?
Forecasts indicate that Thursday's peak will be followed by a warmer weekend, with temperatures only slightly decreasing. The alert remains high for the next few days: precautions are advised at least until Sunday.
