Byzantine New Year in Amalfi 2026: Program from August 31st to September 2nd

The countdown has begun for the Byzantine New Year , the historical reenactment that will bring Amalfi and Atrani to life in its 26th edition from August 31st to September 2nd, 2026. The highlight will be the investiture of the new Magister of Amalfi Civilization , entrusted this year to chef Enrico Cosentino , with the grand finale featuring a concert by Tosca.

A thousand-year-old tradition

The event commemorates the beginning of the fiscal and legal year in the territories of the Eastern Empire: September 1st , the date that coincided with the appointment of the Dukes of Amalfi. This practice was in vogue from 839 , the year of the autonomous republic's foundation, until the Bourbon period.

The program for August 31th

The event kicks off on Monday, August 31st at 7:00 pm in Largo Duca Piccolomini with the round table discussion "Memory, Identity, and Cultural Heritage of Amalfi Cuisine." Speakers include art historian Giovanni Camelia , medievalist Giuseppe Gargano , chef Antonio Dipino , and journalist Antonino Siniscalchi.

At 20pm the public interview with the Magister : Enrico Cosentino, the chef considered one of the architects of the success of Campania cuisine in the world, will talk with the journalist Mario Amodio telling the story of the invention of Scialatielli.

The Historical Procession of September 1st

The highlight is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1st . At 6:30 pm, the flag-wavers and musicians of Città Regia will perform in Piazza Duomo , then the Historical Procession will begin with over 100 participants in period costume along the route from Amalfi to the churchyard of the Chapel of San Salvatore de' Birecto in Atrani.

The investiture of the Magister of Amalfi Civilization will be celebrated here , a title dedicated this year to Ezio Falcone , an archaeologist of taste who brought to light the customs and recipes of convent kitchens. Archbishop Orazio Soricelli and the mayors of Amalfi and Atrani, Daniele Milano and Michele Siravo , will be present.

Grand finale with Tosca

On Wednesday, September 2nd, at 9:30 pm, Amalfi's new Piazza Municipio will host Tosca with "Le Feminæ si fanno aspetta," a project celebrating the strength and determination of women. She will be accompanied by a quartet featuring Giovanna Famulari on cello and piano, Massimo De Lorenzi on guitar, and Luca Scorziello on drums.
