Article contents

Il Comicon Festival, one of the most beloved events for pop culture enthusiasts, returns to Mostra d'Oltremare of Naples from 1 to 4 May 2025. After the record of over 175.000 visitors in the last edition, the festival celebrates its 25th edition this year with an author's poster, signed by Jamie Hewlett, an iconic figure in comics and contemporary culture. Here's everything you need to know about the poster that represents the spirit of this edition and the creative genius who created it.

Jamie Hewlett's Official Poster: Symbol of a Generation

To celebrate the milestone of the 25esima edition, Comicon has entrusted to Jamie Hewlett the making of the official poster. The artist is known for creating Tank girl, a cult comic of the post-punk scene, and for being the co-founder of the Gorillaz, the famous virtual band that redefined musical and visual aesthetics.

Who is Murphy, the protagonist of the poster?

At the centre of the poster we find Murphy, a girl who embodies the spirit of the festival. Nerd and punk at the same time, her face is inspired by Alfred E. Neuman di MAD Magazine. Murphy is adorned with T-shirts, patches and pins featuring iconic pop culture references: from Hayao Miyazaki a Calvin & Hobbes, Up to Watchmen e Tanino Liberatore.

“Young Murphy has a black eye and a missing tooth, the result of a fun weekend on her BMX. Despite her injuries, she is ready for her favorite festival: COMICON!” – said Jamie Hewlett.

Murphy is more than just a mascot: he is a symbol of the vital energy and enthusiasm that comics, music and pop culture instill in all of us. His look, irreverent and authentic, celebrates the joy of feeling like a fan without compromise.

Jamie Hewlett: A Genius of Contemporary Culture

Jamie Hewlett is one of the most influential artists on the international creative scene. His career, which began with the creation of Tank girl, exploded with the worldwide success of the Gorillaz, a project born in collaboration with Damon Albarn. Hewlett is known for his ability to blend comics, music and visual art, creating works that capture the essence of our time.

With over three decades of career, Jamie Hewlett has managed to continually reinvent himself, exploring new artistic languages. His work is characterized by:

  • Visual energy and vibrant colors.
  • Pop and post-punk cultural references.
  • Irony and narrative depth.

Hewlett is an artist who never takes himself too seriously, but who manages to communicate profound messages through lightness and irony. The choice to entrust him with the poster for the 25th edition of Comicon is not a coincidence: his unique style perfectly represents the inclusive and dynamic spirit of the festival.

Why is Jamie Hewlett's poster so significant?

The poster created by Hewlett is not only a tribute to pop culture, but a true celebration of the community of fans that animates Comicon. Through Murphy, Hewlett was able to synthesize the essence of the festival: a place where passions, talents and creativity meet, giving life to a unique experience.

“Carla Campea's linguistic discourse, between image and matter - explains Massimo Padovani, curator of the exhibition - is rooted in the various experiences of a distant past, but brings the work, through innovative research, towards a showy signage, ready to amaze, to make one imagine, even to furnish, making use of a curious and Dadaist spirit. The traces of paint are combined with images, things, objects, plastics and the whole is seasoned with often brazen colors, almost deliberately cumbersome, collected in an aseptic space and wisely isolated by the plexiglass box that seems to steal the air from our existence to protect the work itself.”
