Eduardo De Filippo in comics, the exhibition in Naples celebrates the icon of Italian theatre
A Forty years since the death of Eduardo De Filippo, Naples pays homage to the immense legacy of the great actor, playwright and director with a one-of-a-kind exhibition: Eduardo. Comic Theater.
The exhibition was inaugurated today, Wednesday 20 November, at the Pio Monte della Misericordiain via the 253 Tribunals in Naples. The event, promoted by Italian School of Comix, celebrates Eduardo by giving new life to a project born about thirty years ago: the adaptation of his comedies in film format comic.
The ambitious project, conceived by Domenico Corrado, represented the first attempt to transport Eduardo's theatre into an illustrated narrative, paying homage to his art in a completely innovative way.
What is the story of Eduardo de Filippo's comic book project?
The project was born with the aim of making the work of Eduardo De Filippo even through a modern and accessible visual language, such as that of comic. The idea of Domenico Corrado translating his plays into an illustrated format was pioneering for the time, especially for the Southern Italy, where there were no serial projects of this scale. After two years of intense work, the first twelve comedies were published in newsstands with monthly releases, receiving a great success both by critics and the public.
The exhibition is organized into three main sections:
- The first section is dedicated to comedy “The mayor of the Health District” and includes color prints which feature iconic scenes from the show.
- The second part consists of twelve panels one meter by two, each dedicated to one of the first illustrated comedies by the great actor and director.
- The third section includes noticeboards with the original comics and all Publications created, offering visitors a close-up look at the creative process behind these unique works.
The exhibition came to life thanks to many talents, such as Alessandro Nespolino, Raul and Gianluca Cestaro, Joseph Ricciardi, Antonio Marinetti, Luke Raymond, Gianluca Acciarino, Without to forget Dario Sansone e Ivan Cappiello, all cartoonists who contributed to making the project a success in every aspect, from the illustrations to the narrative concept.
