On Thursday, September 10, Naples will host the opening match of the European Men's Volleyball Championships: Italy vs. Sweden in Piazza del Plebiscito at 21:15 PM, weather permitting. For the occasion, the square will be completely closed to cars , while the Metro Line 1 will remain open on its usual schedule until 23 PM . The National Magistrates' Association (ANM) has reversed its two-hour early closure announced the day before, following protests from residents.
The U-turn on Metro Line 1
ANM had announced the early closure of Line 1 for Thursday, September 10th, with the last trains at 9:00 PM, to allow for inspections by Ansfisa, the National Agency for Railway Safety. Following protests from residents who resented the closure during the major international match, the company reversed its plans: the metro will remain open until 11:00 PM on its usual schedule, and the inspections will be rescheduled for a new date.
But be careful on the end lines: after 21:30 pm it will no longer be possible to reach the Colli Aminei, Chiaiano and Piscinola stations , which are closed for track replacement work which will be completed next Saturday.
The closures in Piazza del Plebiscito
The traffic plan prepared by the Municipality includes a traffic ban for September 10th starting from 16:00 PM on the roadways of the square in front of the Prefecture, Palazzo Salerno (Commiliter), and the Paggeria ramps, as well as on Via Solitaria, Piazzetta Salazar, Via San Carlo, Via San Nicola da Tolentino, and the Brancaccio ramps. Residents, vehicles with an H permit, law enforcement, emergency vehicles, taxis on Via San Carlo, and accredited journalists are exempt from the ban.
Starting at 16:00 PM, one-way traffic will also be in effect in Piazza Carolina and Via Chiaia toward Piazza Trieste e Trento. The only alternative route for those arriving in the area will be Via Nardones , which can be accessed from Piazza Trieste e Trento. It will be closed only during the arrival of President Sergio Mattarella, and will then reopen.
Parking and stopping bans
Starting September 10, starting 9:00 a.m., stopping and parking are prohibited, with forced removal of vehicles, in Piazza Trieste e Trento, Via San Carlo, Via Vittorio Emanuele III, Piazzetta Carolina, Via Giovanni Serra, Rampe Paggeria, and Via Cesario Console. Starting 18:00 p.m., the bus parking areas on Via San Carlo and Via Cesario Console, and the taxi parking areas on Piazza Carolina and Via San Carlo, are closed.
On Via Cesario Console, between Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Santa Lucia, the parking ban with removal is already in effect from 12:00 PM on Monday, September 7th until 15:00 PM on Friday, September 11th. Also starting from 16:00 PM on Thursday, in the square and surrounding areas, the sale of beverages in glass, rigid plastic, or canned containers will be banned : only light plastic or paper cups will be permitted, and pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum) is also prohibited.
The challenge and the alternatives
The court with stands has been set up in the center of the square, on the side of the semicircle of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. If bad weather were to ruin the plans, Plan B is already in place, with the match moving to the PalaSele in Eboli, as detailed in the article about Eurovolley at risk of rain .
