Mario Martone is one of the best known and most important directors of our Naples and lately he surprised us with the beautiful film Qui I laugh, dedicated to Eduardo Scarpetta with a great Toni Servillo.
Martone, however, is not only a film director and he also dedicates a lot to the theater. In January we can go to see one of his latest performances at the Mercadante in Naples, where he staged Il filo di mezzogiorno, which we will be able to see until 16 January 2022.
This is a show on the female condition, depression and, more generally, the discovery of their fears and frailties.
The theatrical adaptation is by Ippolita di Majo and Mario Martone is the director.
A journey into the soul of a woman
The protagonist of this beautiful show is Goliarda Wisdom, author of the book from which the theatrical representation is based, which recounts his psychoanalytic experience.
After passing a bad period of depression which also led her to attempt suicide, she seeks redemption by dedicating herself to writing, telling her feelings.
A story that, through personal experience, leads to the general public universal themes such as fear, love, but also the female condition, all without moral prejudices.
A feminist and a partisan
Goliarda Speranza is an author who for a long time was not known to the general public, but her works have gradually become famous over time.
His most famous novel is "The art of joy", a novel by training, love, adventure and even an imaginary autobiography, as it has been repeatedly defined.
It was certainly one woman outside the box for his time: he fought like partisan and fought for the instances of the feminism e against the prevailing conformism.
The book scandal Il filo di mezzogiorno
Il filo di mezzogiorno, the book that inspired Martone, was published in 1969 and has always been considered scandalous because it is a detailed narration of his psychoanalytic journey. Between memories, emotions and mental associations he manages to get help from his psychoanalyst and will finally be able to get out of the darkness that gripped her.
Unfortunately, in doing so, he also had to suffer a lot due to electric shocks and hospitalization in an asylum.
The cast of the show
To give life to this intense and moving story are:
- Donatella Finocchiaro who plays Goliarda Speranza;
- Robert DeFrancesco, his psychoanalyst.
Two interpreters who accompanied Martone to other Italian theaters and that we can now admire at the Mercadante.
