Banco di Napoli

Saturday May 21, 2022 it will be the inauguration in Naples of the new headquarters of the Gallerie d'Italia which will be located in the building of the former bank of Naples, in via Toledo 177, a structure that was designed by the architect Marcello Piacentini.

So it will no longer be the Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano the headquarters of the Gallerie d'Italia because the move will take place towards Palazzo Piacentini: the new headquarters will be a structure of well ten thousand square meters and will host a section of Neapolitan and southern paintings and sculptures from the seventeenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century.

Caravaggio's masterpiece is also moving

Naturally also Caravaggio's masterpiece, The Martyrdom of Sant'Orsola, will be transferred to these new premises and there will be new sections dedicated to Attic and Magna Graecia ceramics to be discovered.

The rooms of the new Palazzo Piacentini

The works for the transfer of the new Museum of Gallerie d'Italia in Naples, from Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano to Palazzo Piacentini, began in 2020. Thanks to these works, which in any case did not upset the building designed by Marcello Piacentini, the Palazzo will be able to welcome the various collections.

In particular, the museum will be divided into the following sections:

  • ground floor there will be Great Hall which together with the Assembly hall, the real jewel of the Palace, will host temporary exhibitions and various cultural initiatives, while the classrooms will host educational activities for schools and beyond. There will also be a new Library with a collection of volumes from Intesa Sanpaolo's book heritage.
  • on the first floor, in the first section curated by Fernando Mazzocca, there will be paintings and sculptures from the Neapolitan and southern areas. You will find the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula by Caravaggio and works by Artemisia Gentileschi, Luca Giordano, Gaspar van Wittel, Anton Smink Pitloo, Giacinto Gigante, Domenico Morelli and Vincenzo Gemito;
  • on the second floor there will be an exhibition of Attic and Magna Graecia ceramics with the Caputi collection, second section edited by Fabrizio Paulucci.
  • always on the second floor there will be the third section with a selection of XNUMXth and XNUMXst century works of art by Intesa Sanpaolo, with works by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Mario Schifano, Giulio Paolini and others;
  • al fifth floor, i will be a panoramic terrace with a restaurant managed by multi-star chef Giuseppe Iannotti;
  • banking services will continue to operate on the other two floors.

The restaurant with the multi-starred chef

As mentioned in the fifth floor, where the Banco di Napoli guesthouse used to be, there will be a panoramic terrace with a beautiful view of the Gulf, the Port and San Martino. There will also be a restaurant managed by multi-star chef Giuseppe Iannotti.

With his restaurant Krèsios, in Telese Terme, he has earned two Michelin stars and will allow us to taste artfully prepared haute cuisine dishes.

In addition, the Luminist Bistrot will open on the ground floor in July, with 50 seats and a menu inspired by the Neapolitan tradition.
