Euripides' Bacchantes at the Mercadante Theater in Naples, the classic tragedy in a "rock" version

Le Baccanti at the Mercadante Theater in Naples

At the Mercadante Theater in Naples, Euripides' Bacchantes will be staged, a tragedy in a “rock” version starring a female God Dionysus.

Il Mercadante Theater of Naples will host the reruns of the show "The Bacchae of Euripides", the version rock of the show signed by the director Andrea De Rosa. 22 from November to December 3 2017 it will be the most important appointment of the theater season of the Stabile and will continue the director's path in the great classics of the theater.

Indeed, De Rosa has already experimented with Euripides' Le Troiane (in 1999), with von Hofmannsthal's Electra (in 2004) and with Seneca's Phaedra (in 2015), just to name a few of his adaptations. Le Baccanti, however, turned out to be a small masterpiece both thanks to the choice of a woman Dionysus both because the staging has faced different challenges important.

Il The show's debut was in the Teatro Grande in Pompeii as part of the review Pompeii Theatrum Mundi, a very suggestive location that has maximized the pièce thanks to the archaeological ruins that acted as a stage. At Mercadante the scene will not lose its impact technological object-structure and it will be a sort of pulsing heart from which the music will scan its rhythm, pressing or violent, which is the basis of the drama of the show.

The Bacchantes at the Mercadante: the challenges of the show

The Bacchae of Euripides puts at the center of the scene a God, Dionysus, played by the young actress Federica Rossellini, and is the only tragedy in which the protagonist is a divinity. The director's first challenge was to understand how to represent a God to which others have followed on relationship between the sacred and the mysterious and the importance of religion in our lives. Does the latter still exist? God is really dead? Does it make sense to speak again of a God in a world where the sacred seems to have disappeared? Where can we still listen to divinity?

These and others are the questions that the show asks the viewer and the director begins a journey in search of Dionysus, "a God difficult to grasp, fragile and contradictory, together man and woman, weak and powerful, creative and destructive but the stakes are very high because he promises to men - through wine, drugs, dance, music, sex and death - the release from pain".

Interpreters of the Bacchantes

In addition to Federica Rossellini who plays Dionysus, the other actors are: Marco Cavicchioli (Tiresia), Cristina Donadio (Agave), Ruggero Dondi (Cadmo), Lino Musella (Penteo), Matthieu Pastore (Messenger), Irene Petris (Chorus), Emilio Vacca (Messenger), Carlotta Viscovo (Chorus). With them the three students of the school of the Teatro Stabile of Naples, Marialuisa Bosso, Francesca Fedeli, Serena Mazzei (who complete the choir).

The show is produced by Teatro Stabile di Napoli-National Theater and the Teatro Stabile di Torino-Teatro Nazionale.
