Impressionist Exhibition Naples: works and innovation at the Basilica della Pietrasanta

Article contents

La Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore at Pietrasanta of Naples hosts the exhibition “Impressionists and Fin-de-Siècle Paris”, edited by Vittorio Sgarbi, which celebrates one of the most revolutionary artistic movements in the history of art. Open until 27 April 2025, the exhibition presents 69 works divided into three sections, signed by 40 artists who traced the birth and evolution of Impressionism.

A Journey into Impressionism

The exhibition is a tribute to the 150 years since the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, an event that marked the beginning of a true artistic revolution. The exhibition itinerary traces a time span that goes from 1850 al 1915, investigating the cultural and social context that contributed to the birth of the movement.

The exhibition is divided into three sections:

  1. The Realist Revolution and the Barbizon School
    • Explore the roots of Impressionism, with works by artists such as Corot, Delacroix e Millet, which paved the way for a new vision of the landscape and reality.
  2. The Conquest of the Impressionists
    • Enter the heart of the movement, with masterpieces by Many, Degas, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne and many others. This section highlights their research on color, light and emotion.
  3. After the Conquest: Art is not just reproduction
    • It features post-impressionist works by artists such as Jeanniet e Girard, which show the movement's lasting influence.

An innovative path

In addition to the works, the exhibition offers a multimedia experience thanks to stations with Oculus 3D, which allow you to immerse yourself in naturalistic settings of the time. This innovative approach allows visitors to experience Impressionism in a unique and engaging way.

The words of Vittorio Sgarbi

Curator Vittorio Sgarbi describes the exhibition as “a celebration of sensitivity and emotion.” According to Sgarbi, the Impressionists did not seek to reproduce reality realistically, but to capture its psychological and sentimental essence. “They replaced reality with consciousness, paving the way for contemporary art,” says the critic.
