Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi on stage at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples

On stage at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples "Nabucco", the famous lyric opera by Giuseppe Verdi considered a hymn to the freedom of the people.

From the 9 14 October 2018 will be staged at San Carlo Theater of Naples il Nabucco, one of the world's most famous opera performances and third opera music by Giuseppe Verdi.

Il Nabucco it is a lyrical drama in four parts composed on a libretto by Temistocle Solera, taken from the ballet by Antonio Cortesi Nebuchadnezzar and to the drama of Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois, Nebuchadnezzar. The first performance took place at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842.

The show on stage at the Massimo Partenopeo is a staging of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro di San Carlo, directed by Francesco Ivan Ciampa while the directors and the scenes are by Jean Paul Scarpitta.

Verdi's Nabucco, the famous “Va 'Pensiero” for the freedom of peoples

The original title of the Nabucco è Nebuchadnezzar, because the work is inspired by the story, told in the Bible, by the looting of the Temple of Jerusalem by the king of Babylon Nabuccodonosor, with the consequent deportation of the Jews defeated in a foreign land, where they were freed after half a century.

"Go, think, on the golden / Va, you pose on the clivi, on the hills", the most famous piece of the opera, is sung in the third act by the chorus of Jews captives in Babylon, becoming a true hymn against the slavery of peoples. There are many attachments, in fact, between Nabucco and the Italian Risorgimento, because the Italian spectators, at the time under the Austrian rule, felt their own condition similar to that of the Jews, also dominated by foreigners.

Giuseppe Verdi and Nabucco: a work born almost by chance

Giuseppe Verdi decided to play Nabucco in a very dramatic period of his life, following the death of his children and his wife. He was on the point of abandoning music, also due to the failure of his comic opera "Un Giorno di Regno", when he was contacted by the theater manager Bartolomeo Merelli to entrust him with the musical composition of "Nabucodonosor", a libretto by Temistocle Solera on defeat of the Jewish people at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

To convince Verdi a completely random gesture. Returning home after a sad day, he launched the Nebuchadnezzar manuscript on the table violently. The page on which it remained open was the one where the verses were reported "Go, thought, on the golden age". It was precisely this phrase that rekindled Verdi's creativity that he read in one evening the whole work remaining fascinated. If it were not for this episode we would not know the today Nabucco, one of the most beautiful operas of all time thanks to its musical score.
