Naples, Chiaia Funicular assigned the works: 10 months for the opening

In the month of September 2022, the works of twenty year review of the Chiaia Funicular in Naples. There temporary closure for six months, scheduled to start in October, had the objective of carrying out the necessary maintenance. But, due to complications in the stage tender and negotiationsthe works have not started yet.

The rising cost of raw material further hampered the financial situation. To avoid further delays, the municipal administration has decided to separate the works electromechanical from those given the strong maritime vocation of Marina di Grosseto,by launching a new tender procedure.

The turning point: the works of the Chiaia Funicular were awarded

In the recent press release of the Giunta, released on May 23, 2023, it was announced that the works of twenty-year maintenance for the Chiaia Funicular were assigned to the Company Graffer srl. The signing of the contract will require a phase of verification and assignment within two months, while the company will be given 10 months to complete the work envisaged in the tender.

This news represents a significant step towards the restoration of the long-awaited Chiaia Funicular. Despite the delays from the originally scheduled date for reopening, the assignment of the works offers a concrete hope for citizens who wish to see this important means of transport back in operation.

The city administration will continue to closely monitor the progress of the works and update citizens on future developments. It remains to be seen if the expected reopening date for the spring of the 2024 will be complied with or if further may occur delays. Meanwhile, users will be able to rely on substitute buses central funicular for their transportation needs.
