The Royal Bourbon Powder Factory Park in Scafati reopens with temporary use and sculptures by Philip Colbert.

After years of abandonment, the Royal Bourbon Powder Factory of Scafati It comes back to life. On July 28, 2026, the park of the historic-industrial complex opened to the public, granted for temporary use for 18 months by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which has initiated a process of redevelopment and enhancement of one of the most important sites in Southern Italy.

The inauguration also saw the presentation of two sculptures by the British artist Philip Colbert, included in the exhibition project "Pompeii: Pop Mythology," running from July 27th until November at the Pompeii Archaeological Park. The exhibition features over thirty sculptures by the artist, in dialogue with the archaeological heritage, creating a cultural connection between Pompeii and Scafati.

A valorization project

The initiative is promoted by the State Property Agency and the Pompeii Archaeological Park in collaboration with the Municipality of Scafati, the Campania Region, the Sarno River Basin Regional Park Authority, and the University of Salerno. The goal is to transform the complex into a center of cultural, environmental, and scientific research tourism.

The current concession covers a portion of approximately 4,6 hectares within a total area of ​​15 hectares, strategically located between Naples and Salerno, a few kilometers from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

The Avenue of the Plane Trees and the upcoming events

The opening of the Park allows the use of the Avenue of the Plane Trees, the historical and landscape axis of the Royal Bourbon Powder Factory, which connects buildings, the water system, paths and open spaces according to the original nineteenth-century project.

The "Historia" program features a rich calendar of events: farmers' markets featuring local produce, historical reenactments, equestrian events, themed gatherings, concerts, cultural activities, and initiatives dedicated to the circular economy. During the Christmas season, a village with markets, workshops, and events is planned.
