The Riviera di Chiaia will have to close after the America's Cup to resurface the potholes and complete the tramway work. The road had been temporarily reopened on Monday, September 21st, with two-way traffic and Via Caracciolo occupied by the pre-regatta village.

Today, Sunday 27 September, a municipal ordinance extended the closure of Viale Dohrn and Via Caracciolo until 2 October , postponing the new construction site on the Riviera until dismantling has taken place.

Why the Riviera di Chiaia must close again

The restyling work on the Riviera di Chiaia is not yet complete. Workers from the company commissioned by the Municipality worked intensive shifts throughout the week leading up to the America's Cup to reopen the bus lane in time for the event. The reopening came on Monday, September 21st, when the road from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Vittoria was once again passable.

That reopening, however, was temporary. As municipal sources confirm, work will resume in the coming weeks, and to complete it, the Riviera di Chiaia will need to be closed again. The road has been the focus of construction work for the new tram line for months, with construction sites already requiring several closures.

The potholes on the bus lane

As reported by several residents, there are still potholes in the bus lane, some of which have been patched with cold asphalt. The most obvious damage is near the Sirignano district , in front of number 168 and near Vico S. Guido . Some patching was done earlier this week.

Yesterday, Saturday, September 26, workers from Napoli Servizi responded to the Villa Comunale , where a broken tree was located, and to a small pothole on Viale Anton Dohrn. The company left a rapid response team on site.

The report of the former president of the 1st Municipality

Francesco De Giovanni, former president of the First Municipality, is demanding that the final result be worthy of the construction site. "We hope that after so many years of work on the Riviera di Chiaia, the road won't remain like this, but will be paved to a high standard," he says. In the areas patched with cold asphalt, the gravel has come loose from the constant traffic of cars, creating numerous depressions. In some places, he adds, it looks like the tracks have even been covered.

What the City says about the patches

The Department of Traffic is monitoring the situation. Councilor Edoardo Cosenza explains that the repairs are old, near the manholes and the signaling channel. A new signaling system will be installed in the center of the tram lane, with dedicated manholes.

Where the final shafts will be located, the current work is temporary, precisely to keep the road open for the next few days. Then, the final shafts will be installed and the telematics cable for the automatic tram signaling will be installed, where it hasn't already been installed. Finally, the entire road will be resurfaced with a final coat.

Via Caracciolo and Viale Dohrn are closed until October 2nd.

The America's Cup Race Village will remain open until 9:00 PM today, complete with a gazebo and store, for the awards ceremony. Dismantling will begin immediately afterwards, which will take longer than expected. The current traffic plan, with the closure of Viale Dohrn and Via Caracciolo, has been extended until October 2nd.

According to Councilor Cosenza, the Lungomare will be reopened with the first two of four lanes , accessible towards Piazza Vittoria. Only after that will it be possible to change traffic on the Riviera di Chiaia.

Local Police on the streets until October 5th

Local Police patrols will remain in service until October 5th, with 120 officers per day , coordinated by Commander Ciro Esposito . The commander, who will retire in December, has waived his vacation time to follow the America's Cup security plan. The patrol will continue until the new closure order for the Riviera di Chiaia is issued.

According to the Municipality, the traffic system held up, with difficulty only during the protests of the Bagnoli and No America's Cup committees, which blocked the Galleria Vittoria.
