Transport strikes October 2026: schedule and timetable
Image created with AI
October 2026 opens and closes with two general strikes , while the transport calendar lists 27 strikes on trains, planes, buses, subways, and ferries. For travelers, the surprise comes not from the national strike dates, almost all of which were announced weeks ago, but from the numerous local stoppages concentrated between October 9th and 16th : the busiest week of the month.
The situation is outlined in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport's prospectus , updated to October 5, 2026 , and monitored by the Guarantee Commission for Strikes in Essential Public Services. The dates are still subject to change: the unions have time to cancel, move, or add days. It's best to keep an eye on your operator and, if you're leaving, plan an alternative a few days in advance.
National strikes: the dates to mark
Three days will have repercussions on multiple sectors. The first has already passed, on October 2nd , with a multi-sector strike called by CSLE that affected both public and private sectors. The climax is mid-month and the end of the month, with two general strikes that, however, have different scopes.

Taxi
No taxi or NCC protests are planned for October, according to the ministerial report updated to October 5th . However, this sector remains the one with the most unpredictable participation: independent organizations can announce a stoppage with just a few days' notice, and taxi service availability in art cities is particularly noticeable in the evening hours. If you're counting on a taxi for a train or flight, it's best to keep the service numbers and apps handy and have a Plan B.
Maritime (ferries and hydrofoils)
There are two maritime dates this month. The first has already passed, within the framework of the multi-sector strike of October 2nd . The second is the most serious for the Gulf: 48 hours of stoppage in the port system of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea , which includes the ports of Naples, Salerno, and Castellammare di Stabia.

For those planning a trip to the Gulf islands, it's a good idea to book early and check the company's announcements : the guide on how to take the ferry to Capri, Ischia, and Procida from Naples explains tickets, ports, and boarding times.
Strikes in Naples, Rome, Milan, and Bologna
The four cities in the network are following different paths: Naples is the most affected with three local dates, Milan has the most critical day of the month, while Rome and Bologna are mainly affected by national events and a freight stoppage in Emilia.
Naples – three local events. The first is the 48-hour strike of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea port system from October 15th to 16th ; then the 4-hour strike of EAV DTF travelling staff on Friday, October 16th from 7:40 PM to 11:40 PM, proclaimed by Faisa-Confail ; and the eight-hour strike by AIR Campania on Wednesday, October 28th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM . No strikes are involving ANM or the city metro systems: the most recent precedent is the strike on Metro Lines 1 and 6 in Naples in mid-September.
Rome – No local protests are planned in the updated schedule for October 5th. The effects will be felt on domestic flights: the Fiumicino hub may be affected by the easyJet stop on October 16th.
Milan – Friday, October 9th is a critical day with a 24-hour strike by ATM group companies , called by AL-COBAS and Confial Trasporti : metro, tram, and bus services are at risk with various modes of operation. In Lombardy, Arriva Italia vehicles will also be stopped in Bergamo on October 16th.
Bologna – No urban unrest in October, but on October 29th , Trenitalia Customer Operations staff at the Bologna, Reggio Emilia, and Rimini offices were suspended for 24 hours . Otherwise, only national staff were affected.

Warranty and refund bands: what to do
Law 146/1990 and the resolutions of the Guarantee Commission require service slots to be respected on strike days. For local public transport, the guarantee generally covers the 6:00-9:00 and 18:00-21:00 time slots on weekdays; for rail services, the same time slots apply for regional trains, while for long-distance trains, companies publish the list of guaranteed trains.
If the train is canceled, the passenger is entitled to a refund or rerouting on the next available service. For flights, European Regulation 261/2004 provides for refunds or rerouting in the event of cancellation, while compensation may not be due if the strike is considered an extraordinary circumstance . Airlines are still required to provide assistance. It's worth reading the carrier's information and, if in doubt, requesting a refund in writing.
A few practical tips help more than the rules: move your trip to the middle of the day, choose the first morning flight when flying on a strike day, and have your operator's contact information ready. If the strike requires a long layover in the city, luggage storage in Naples may also be useful for traveling light. Anyone who experienced the September 13th flight strike knows how important it is to check the status of your flight early.
