Schools in Campania: No postponements, starting September 15th

Schools will reopen in Campania on September 15th , without any postponements: the Region has responded to a petition requesting to postpone the start of the school year due to the heat, confirming the previously established schedule. The request, which had surpassed 6.000 signatures in just a few hours , will not be granted. The reasons were explained by the Regional Council's Education Councilor, Andrea Morniroli.

The Region says no to the postponement

School activities will resume regularly on September 15th , as scheduled. The Campania Region has clarified that it is impossible to accept the proposal to postpone the start of classes in the short term, despite the large number of signatures collected on the petition in just a few hours.

The request had divided public opinion: on one side, those in favor of the postponement, and on the other, working parents who, with the postponed reopening, would have found themselves having to quickly organize alternative placements for their children.

The petition started from Agropoli

The petition was launched by Professor Maria Cuono , a teacher at a school in Agropoli . The proposal was to postpone the start of school activities until October 1st , to allow students and teachers to hold lessons in milder weather, also considering the shortcomings of regional school buildings.

Because sledding is not possible

The main reason is regulatory: by law, the school year must last at least 200 days . Starting in mid-September, the end of classes falls, as usual, in June; by moving the start to October, the end of the year would be postponed accordingly, while still respecting the mandatory 200 days.

The temperature problem, therefore, would arise again at the end of the year, perhaps in an even more severe form, with activities destined to continue until the end of June and the beginning of July, as Councilor Morniroli explains regarding the school start dates.

What happens on September 15th

This year, school will officially begin on September 15th . The Region's task will be to implement measures to benefit the school community, equipping schools with suitable equipment to address the consequences of climate change, as also discussed for the schools in Pozzuoli waiting to reopen.
