"Figli d '' a Madonna" is the dramatized guided tour that will introduce the audience to the history of the Basilica dell'Annunziata and the Ruota degli Esposti.
Sunday March 31 2019 returns the guided tour of the complex of the Annunziata in Naples by Title Children of Madonna which allows visitors to learn about the history of a historic place that represents one of the oldest welfare institutions in Italy for the care of abandoned children. Here, in fact, until the nineteenth century, the ancient custom of abandoning newborns took place at the so-called Exhibit Wheel.
The show is presented by the cultural association NarteA and Teatro Insania and is composed of texts written by Antimo Casertano who is also interpreter with Daniela Ioia and Antonio Agerola.
The visit to the Basilica of SS. Annunziata Maggiore and the history of the Wheel of the Exposed
During the dramatized guided tour, the spectators will be able to admire the wonderful spaces of the Basilica of the SS. Annunziata Maggiore, an ancient church of the fourteenth century of which you can visit the sacristy, the treasure chapel and the ancient courtyard of the hospital.
The guests will know, through the stories told during the play, the original function of the Annunziata complex which included a hospital, a convent, a hospice for foundlings and a "conservatory" for the exhibits. Newborn abandoned children were placed inside a "wheel", that is a sort of cylindrical wooden drum, and collected inside by nurses ready to intervene at every call. These children were called "children of the Madonna", "children of Nunziata" or "exposed".
The famous sculptor is also among the "illustrious" newborns abandoned inside the Complesso dell'Annunziata Vincenzo Gemito, whose story will be told during the show.
