Piazzale Tecchio in Naples changes name: goodbye to fascist references

Piazzale Tecchio in Naples

Piazzale Tecchio and Via Vittorio Emanuele III in Naples change name: eliminated the fascist references from toponymy.

On the occasion of Memorial Day 2018, the mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris announced that Piazzale Tecchio will change its name and, with it, also via Vittorio Emanuele III.

Piazzale Tecchio will become Piazzale Giorgio Ascarelli, while the second road will be Salvatore Morelli. The decision, from what we read in a Facebook post of the first citizen of Naples, lies in the fact of no longer wanting to name the square after the former provincial secretary of the fascist party, but to the founder of Calcio Napoli.

A decision that comes on the day when the memory, among others, of Luciana Pacifici, one of the smallest victims of Nazism, has been commemorated. Instead, we want to remember Ascarelli, founder of Soccer Naples to which the first stadium (which is located in Piazzale Tecchio) was named in 1930, but after his death the fascist hierarchs ordered the name change due to the man's Jewish origins.
