Naples Ring Road Closed, Tanker Overturned and Traffic Blocked

A serious accident has paralysed traffic on the Naples ring road in the day Monday 10 March 2025. A tanker truck loaded with fuel overturned at km 11+600, causing the closure of the entire stretch of road in both directions between Vomero and Fuorigrotta.

Accident dynamics and current situation

The accident occurred shortly after the 12:30, when the heavy vehicle, for reasons still being investigated, overturned, completely occupying the carriageway. The fuel leak on the road made it necessary to intervene immediately by the Fire fighters, who are working to secure the area and prevent possible fires or explosions. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Following the accident, the authorities ordered the closure of the ring road in both directions until the completion of the remediation operations, expected within 20:00 same day.

Alternative routes and recommended diversions

To limit traffic disruption, some measures have been set up mandatory exits and alternative routes:

• Towards Pozzuoli: Mandatory exit at Vomero, with the possibility of returning to Fuorigrotta via ordinary roads.
• Towards Capodichino: Mandatory exit at Fuorigrotta, with recommended return to Camaldoli.

In addition, the entrances to Outside Grotta, Vomero, Arenella, Camaldoli, Capodimonte, Malta Course and Maddalena Avenue to avoid further traffic congestion.

The accident caused kilometric queues in the sections immediately preceding the closures:

• 3 km queue between Capodimonte and Vomero towards Pozzuoli.
• 1 km queue between Italy 90 and Fuorigrotta towards Capodichino.

Authorities recommend that motorists avoid the Naples ring road and to opt for alternative routes on urban roads.
