Teatro San Carlo presents the 2026/2027 season: 11 operas and 6 ballets towards the 290th anniversary.

Il Teatro di San Carlo of Naples officially presented the 2026 / 2027 season, a billboard that revolves around the 290th anniversary of the foundation, which took place on November 4, 1737. The press conference was held on June 30 in Naples with speeches by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi, the superintendent Fulvio Macciardi and the regional councilor Onofrio Cutaia.

«Today the Teatro di San Carlo presents all the conditions to consolidate itself as a protagonist in the national and international cultural panorama», declared Gaetano Manfredi, president of the Foundation. "The historic tradition is complemented by new productions: the priority was and is to maintain the San Carlo at its usual level."

The billboard includes 11 opera titles e 6 ballet productions, plus 14 symphony concerts and 17 chamber music concerts. Five new productions, a sign of the desire to strengthen the Neapolitan Teatro Massimo's role as a center of cultural production.

The opera season begins December 2nd with Luisa Miller.

The curtain will rise on December 2, 2026 with Luisa Miller by Giuseppe Verdi, a masterpiece composed in 1849 specifically for the San Carlo. The new production is signed by David Livermore with the direction of Daniel OrenThe soprano is in the cast Mariangela Sicily (Luisa) and, for the first time in Naples, the tenor Piotr Beczala (Rodolfo), together with Igor Golovatenko, Michele Pertusi and Marko Mimica.

A new one will debut in February 2027 Aida directed by Serena Sinigaglia and the direction of Renato Palumbo, set to tour Japan in July 2027 with the full company. The cast includes Maria José Siri, Luciano Ganci, and Elizabeth DeShong.

Spring will be dedicated to the rediscovery of the Neapolitan repertoire between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The director is responsible for two twin productions Mariano Bauduin: Nina or The Crazy One for Love by Paisiello, directed by Fabio Biondi (absent from San Carlo since 1827), and the rare Eight Months in Two Hours, or The Exiles in Siberia by Donizetti, conducted by Fabio Mastrangelo in co-production with the Donizetti Opera Festival.

Two historical productions much loved by the public are returning: Madama Butterfly (directed by Ferzan Özpetek, conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa) and Il barbiere di Siviglia (historic staging by Filippo Crivelli, conducted by Ottavio Dantone). The opera program is completed by three prestigious productions from other theaters: Pagliacci in the historical staging by Franco Zeffirelli, The damnation of Faust by Damiano Michieletto (Abbiati Prize 2017) and Peter Grimes by Paul Curran from La Fenice in Venice.

San Carlo also looks to the present with a commissioned by the composer Alessandro Solbiati, called to complete The Fall of House Usher, a work that Claude Debussy left unfinished between 1908 and 1917.

In July 2027 the Neapolitan Massimo returns to theArena Flegrea with Tosca in the staging by Edoardo De Angelis.

Ballet: from 4 to 6 titles, absolute novelties

Under the guidance of the director Renato Zanella, the San Carlo Ballet Corps expands its offering by bringing the titles from 4 to 6. Alongside the classics Nutcracker Christmas and La dame aux camelias, debuts at the San Carlo Manon's story by Kenneth MacMillan. July will be dedicated to Zorba the Greek by Lorca Massine and others Invitation to the dance, an evening with choreography by Robbins, Scholz, Stevenson and a new creation by Jacopo Godani. Great debuts on the podium: Charles Dutoit e Ton Koopman for the first time in Naples, along with Bertrand De Billy, Alexander Soddy, Pietari Inkinen, Umberto Clerici, and Ramón Tebar. Among the returning performers are Asher Fisch, Hartmut Haenchen, Pinchas Steinberg, and Lorenzo Passerini.

Among the masterpieces on the program are the Canticle by Mendelssohn, the Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” by Mahler and two symphonies by Bruckner (No. 3 and No. 6). The symphonic programme is completed by the Piano Festival in collaboration with the Alessandro Scarlatti Association with Alexander Gadjiev and Michele Campanella, and a opera gala with Plácido Domingo and Sonya Yoncheva to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the tenor's debut at the San Carlo.

Prices unchanged and international tours

Superintendent Macciardi announced that season tickets and tickets will keep the same prices last season. "The Season that opens the path towards the tercentenary celebrates the 290th anniversary of the Theatre as the beginning of a great artistic and cultural project," he declared.
