Up tonight Channel 5, starting at 9.20pm, will be broadcast for the first time on free-to-air TV Oppenheimer, the Oscar-winning biographical blockbuster by Christopher Nolan.

The plot

The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist who directed the Manhattan Project and who is considered the father of the atomic bomb. From scientific genius to moral torment, the film traces the scientist's life up to the famous test Trinity in the New Mexico desert and the subsequent historical and personal consequences.

The cast

In the lead role there is Cillian Murphy, supported by a stellar cast: Emily Blunt in the role of his wife Kitty, Matt Damon in those of General Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. in those of Lewis Strauss and Florence Pugh in those of Jean Tatlock.

Awards

Released in 2023 and inspired by the biography Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film triumphed at the 96th Academy Awards winning seven statuettes: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Original Score. The same haul also went to BAFTA 2024.
