Fountain

The monumental fountain of the Giant or Imacacolatella, dating back to the beginning of the seventeenth, is located in Via Partenope near the Castel dell'Ovo, in Borgo Antico di Santa Lucia.

It was built by the will of Don Antonio Alvarez of Toledo and by Pietro Bernini need Michelangelo Naccherino.

As a first placement he had that in Piazza del Plebiscito next to Royal Palace together with a colossal statue of Jupiter whose bust, found in Pozzuoli, was assembled to other parts to reconstitute the appearance and was called Giant, giving the name to the nearby fountain.

Subsequently both were removed from the square and, in the 1882, the fountain was positioned near the Palazzo dell'Immacolatella, reason for its second name.

Following a temporary move to the Villa del Popolo, in the 1906 it was moved to the open space of Via Partenope where it still stands today.

Structure

The fountain is characterized by three round arches enriched by the coats of arms of the city, of the viceroy of Naples and at the center of the king supported by two putti.

There are two in the central arch sea ​​animals on the sides of a small fountain and in the sides two river deities hold gods sea ​​monsters. In addition two caryatids, placed at the two side ends, support cornucopias.
