The hospital

The hospital of the Hospital friars of Saint John of God it is part of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria della Pace, also consisting of the monastery and the Church of Santa Maria della Pace.

The Hospital Friars of Saint John of God in 1587 bought the palace of the Caracciolo family, and other adjacent houses, to erect the complex.

You can visit the Sala del Lazzaretto which welcomed lepers and plague victims. In the terminal part there is an eighteenth century altar that separated the Hall from the area destined to medical cabinet.
Along the walls runs a balcony from which food and drinks were provided to the sick to avoid the contagion of the employees.

On the walls along the room we can see the paintings of Giacinto Diano and Andrea Viola depicting the Virgin Mary and the Saints of the Order of St. John of God.

  • From Piazza Garibaldi: cross the square in a southerly direction, take Corso Umberto I, turn right onto via Cesare Sersale, then turn right again onto via Tribunali (about 15 minutes on foot)
