Piazza Sannazaro, located near the Lungomare Francesco Caraccioloand Riviera of Chiaia, the Vomero district and Posillipo, is among the most elegant squares in the city of Naples.

The square dates back to the end of the nineteenth century when a large one filled with the coast line allowed the construction of the square, the promenade and Viale Gramsci.
At the center of the square stands the fountain with the splendid statue of the Parthenope siren which is positioned on a rock with animals and aquatic plants.

According to Greek legend, he killed himself because his love for Odysseus was not reciprocated and his lifeless body was dragged by the currents in the place where today stands the Castel dell'Ovo. Episode that will give its name to the city of Naples. The work was created, among others, by Onofrio Buccini and Francesco Jerace.

The square is very busy at all hours of the day and night as there are numerous pizzerias, restaurants, kiosks and bars.

Who was Jacopo Sannazaro

Jacopo Sannazaro, to which the Piazza Sannazaro in Naples, was an Italian poet and humanist who lived between 1458 and 1530. He is mainly famous for his Latin work “De partu Virginis” and for the vernacular pastoral poem “Arcadia”, which exerted a notable influence on literature European pastoral care.

Born in Naples into a nobility family, Sannazaro spent most of his life in his hometown and at the Aragonese court. “Arcadia” combines poetry and prose to tell the idealized life of shepherds in mythical Arcadia, weaving classical elements with a profound personal sensitivity. This work marked an important stage in Renaissance literature for its style and innovative structure.

After the conquest of Naples by the French , fall of the Aragonese kingdom, Sannazaro retired from public life, dedicating himself to literature and the cultivation of his villa. He died in Naples in 1530 and he left a literary legacy of great importance, also celebrated in his hometown with the dedication of public places, such as Piazza Sannazaro.
