The Church

The church of Santa Maria della Pace was built in 1629 by Friars Hospital of Saint John of God based on a project by the architect Pietro De Martino. The works were completed in 1656.

The friars arrived in Naples in the 1575 and lent their work to the hospital of Santa Maria della Vittoria, so called, in memory of the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571. In 1585 they moved to the ancient monastery of Santa Maria D'Agnone in the district of Capuana, and in the 1587 bought the palace of the Caracciolo family, and other adjacent houses, to erect the monastero,hospital , church with the name of Our Lady of Peace, in memory of the peace stipulated, in the 1544, between Spain and France.

Inside the church you can admire, among others, works by Jacopo and Dionisio Lazzari, Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, Nicola Tagliacozzi Canale, Pietro Buonocore and Michele Foschini.

The church has been entrusted to the Ukrainian community di Byzantine rite.

  • Address: Via Tribunali, 181 - 80139 Naples
  • From Piazza Garibaldi: cross the square in a southerly direction, take Corso Umberto I, turn right onto via Cesare Sersale, then turn right again onto via Tribunali (about 15 minutes on foot)
