The Church

The Church of Santa Caterina in Formiello is a monumental and Renaissance church in Naples, located near Porta Capuana need Castel Capuano.

The current complex, built by the Dominican fathers of the Reformed Congregation of Lombardy, replaced a previous church dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria called "a formiello", or "near the canals", near the "formal water sources" (from Latin ad formis), as in its vicinity stood the Bolla aqueduct, dismantled at the end of the nineteenth century for that of the Serino.

The monastery, then, in the 1809 will be deleted at the behest of Little Murat.

Structure

Of the complex you can admire:

  • the shrine located on the churchyard and dedicated to San Gennaro, patron saint of the city, whose bust was the work of Domenico Antono Vaccaro
  • seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century frescoes
  • a splendid decorative apparatus
  • ten chapels
  • the large cloister and the small cloister
  • pharmacy
  • the Confraternity and the crypt of the sisters of the SS. Rosary
