The Macellum or Serapeo
The Macellum of Pozzuoli, also called improperly Serapeum or Temple of Serapis for the discovery of a statue of the Egyptian god Serapis, it was in antiquity one public market.
It consisted of tabernae placed around a large portico with one in the center tholos and enclosed by an exedra in turn preceded by four colossal columns.
The impressive structure is considered to be Flavia era, but it was also active in the following centuries.
Over the centuries the Macellum has been subject to frequent bradyseismic phenomena. This is evidenced by the evident erosion of the columns caused by foraminifera molluscs, the lithodomas, reflecting the continuous elevation and lowering of the ground with respect to the level of the sea.
