Piazza Bellini in Naples

The square

Piazza Bellini is one of the busiest areas of the historic center of Naples due to the presence, in the vicinity, of several university offices, the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, the Academy of Fine Arts and the library of the faculty of "Letters and Philosophy" of the University of Naples Federico II, and for the considerable amount of bar e local that overlook it.

The name of the square is due to the composer Vincenzo Bellini who studied at the Naples Conservatory. The square is also dominated by a statue of Alfonso Balzico, an Italian sculptor and painter, dating back to the 1886.
beautiful monumental palaces of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries surround the square. An example is the Palazzo Castriota Scanderberg.

The ancient walls

On the western side of the square it is possible to admire some remains of the walls of the Greek Neapolis which, on this stretch, ran along Via Costantinopoli.

It is a fortification system made of blocks of compact tuff and is of the double-curtain type and double system of spurs. The walls have been dated, approximately, to the second half of the 4th century BC.
