Vele di Scampia, the definitive eviction of over 50 homes begins
The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, has signed two ordinances which provide for the immediate eviction of more than 50 municipal homes located in the Vele di Scampia. A decision taken to address urgent risks linked to public safety, due to the precarious conditions of the access ramps to the Yellow Sail and the Red Sail.
The homes involved in fact present critical issues that could endanger the safety of the inhabitants, making prompt intervention necessary. The fear is that other accidents occur including the one in July which caused two deaths and dozens injured at the Vela Azzurra.
The reasons for the eviction
The eviction was ordered to avoid serious accidents that could compromise the safety of those living in the Vele. The access ramps to the housing units of the Yellow Sail and Red Sail have been declared in unsafe conditions, and this prompted the authorities to intervene urgently.
The task of managing the operation was entrusted to Local Police, who will be responsible for coordinating all the activities necessary for ensure that the eviction takes place in full compliance with the law and without putting the safety of those involved at risk.
Will assistance be provided to evicted families?
The families affected by the eviction will receive support from social services, which will start operating tomorrow. They will provide all the information needed to access the financial contribution for independent accommodation, a support decided by the Government to allow families to find alternative accommodation.
A contribution resulting from a discussion between the mayor Gaetano Manfredi , Prefecture, which led to a mediation to ensure concrete assistance to the displaced.
The amount of this contribution is not known, but it is hoped that it will help to meet the ever-increasing rent prices.
Protests from the families involved
The eviction of the Scampia sails has led to the raising of several protests by some families. Despite the efforts of the Municipality of Napoli to take care of the removals and to offer the contribution for independent accommodation, about thirty families have expressed strong opposition to the decision to leave their homes.
The families concerned believe that the proposed solution is not sufficient to guarantee adequate accommodation in the short term, fueling a climate of tension. The Municipality has planned to manage any problems of public with the support of the Prefecture, to ensure that the clearance proceeds smoothly.
