Baia, the Portus Julius mosaic found that has been missing for decades!

An important find brings new splendor to the Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park ! A piece of history has once again emerged from the waters of the submerged Baiae area in Bacoli, a marine protected area that preserves the wonders of the ancient Roman site. It is here that a mosaic was discovered that once adorned the room of a domus in Portus Julius.

The work features a black wave pattern around it and is still in excellent condition, with its dark and pink tiles against a white background. Its current history began about forty years ago , when it was first discovered by underwater archaeologists from the Superintendency . It was so well-known that it gained international recognition and was featured in magazines and brochures.

A piece of history lost and then found

Unfortunately, however, changes in the seabed led to its disappearance. This would never have happened today, thanks to modern technology . But fortunately, after years of searching, the treasure was found.

The Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park explained that the research of the last two years has represented a turning point in the search for the archaeological find . According to the latest studies, the area surrounding the mosaic could be part of the work commissioned by Agrippa in the first century BC to block the pirate raids of Sextus Pompeius.
