It is a form of social anxiety very common in new generations, extremely widespread also thanks to the perpetual connection of young people with each other. This type of social relationship has led to the fear of being socially excluded which is in fact the basis of FoMo.

What does the acronym FoMo stand for?

Fear of missing out, which we could translate as “fear of missing out on an experience”. The boys are constantly engaged in new and increasingly active social experiences, living the same both with the light-heartedness typical of their age and almost as a social obligation: if you stop, you lose something and get cut off.

Its opposite is the Jomo (Joy of Missing out), or a state of contentment achieved with disconnection and occasional isolation.

What causes FoMo?

Basically, young people, living constantly interconnected, experience the daily experiences of their friends and peers instantly, almost live.

This has led to an obvious consequence: living the experiences of others in real time activates a mechanism of the type "the grass is always greener on the other side", or the experiences that friends have are more interesting, gratifying and intriguing than those we experience, so we have to do more. A circle that co-feeds each other.
The obvious conclusion is that boys they are afraid of losing experiences by stopping and they experience a kind of frenzy with continuous social engagements.

This social anxiety can cause serious problems such as:

  • Deep stress
  • Depression
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Decline in school performance
  • power supplyADHD in those who suffer from it

How to manage and heal from FoMo?

Since it is a social anxiety disorder, it becomes fundamental, especially in the case of a deeply rooted disorder, speak to a specialist. A psychologist can help the young person manage and deal with the problem.

But be careful: we don't make a bundle of grass. The new generations are all socially intersected and much more active of the previous ones. If the many activities they don't bring to a state of depression, severe stress or a decrease in attention or academic performance, it is not said that it is a pathological form.

Victoria De Angelis of Maneskin suffers from FoMo

A social anxiety that has become particularly famous since he spoke about it Victoria DeAngelis by Maneskin during an interview on Radio Deejay.

The famous bassist recounted that he lives daily the anxiety of losing some experience staying at home and therefore tends to always go out, even when he doesn't feel like it.
On one occasion he made an exception to the rule: tiredness won and he decided not to go out, but, ironically, it was the day when his friends and colleagues met, by pure chance, at a party organized at Madonna's home.
