In Thailand, spirituality is closely intertwined with the Buddhism. Surprisingly, monks play a multifunctional role, acting as spiritual guides, confidants, friends, and even tattoo artists. But these aren't tattoo artists in the conventional sense.
Monks create i Sak Yant, sacred tattoos that are not decorative, but special blessings, realized through a ritual which combines Buddhist precepts with elements of pre-Buddhist religious cultures.

Sak Yant: from tradition to global trend

Unfortunately, like many other Asian traditions, too Sak Yant have become a fad. Initially, they were symbols of protection for warriors, and have remained a tradition in rural Thailand for centuries. Today, however, they are very popular with Western tourists looking for an "authentic" experience.

The popularity of Sak Yant tattoos has exploded thanks to the stories of travelers and celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, proudly displaying their Sak Yant ensembles.

Despite the popularity, the authentic Sak Yant tradition survives.
There are still monks and tattoo artists who respect the ancient teachings. A Western traveler may receive authentic Sak Yant, but must remember that it is a deeply spiritual choice.
