2023 will bring a notable change for Italian students: in fact, we return to the traditional format of the Maturity Examination.
A total of 470.000 students they are preparing to take the important test that marks the end of their high school studies. These graduates will face the first and second written test on a national scale, followed by an oral interview.

The only exception foreseen for students from the regions of Emilia Romagna and Marche, affected by floods, for which an ad hoc exam is foreseen.

Hypotheses on the subject of Italian: which authors?

Among the main uncertainties that hover among the banks, the question emerges on the authors who could be protagonists of the Italian theme. Studenti.it, a reference platform for school GenZ, took care of trying to unravel the mystery, which carried out a survey on 5.600 students, asking them to make predictions.

The students' hypotheses are based on some important anniversaries that occur in 2023:

  • The 150th anniversary of the death of Alessandro Manzoni
  • The centenary of the birth of Italo Calvino
  • The 160th anniversary of the birth of Gabriele D'Annunzio

The podium of student predictions

Based on the responses received, Manzoni, Calvino and D'Annunzio they seem to be the favorites for the Italian theme.

Here is the forecast distribution:

  • 33% of the interviewees believe likely the choice of one of these three authors, considering the recurrences and their relevant role in Italian literature.
  • Manzoni is the alleged perpetrator for 27% of the students.
  • Calvino is the hypothesis of 18% of the interviewees.
  • D'Annunzio is expected by a 17% of students.
  • The remaining 5% of the students hypothesized a topic on another great literary figure, such as Italo Svevo, Primo Levi, Giuseppe Ungaretti and Luigi Pirandello.

A futuristic hypothesis: artificial intelligence

There is also a more futuristic prediction: artificial intelligence for the free theme.
76% of the students consider a trace on this subject probable, against 24% who consider it unlikely, perhaps too obvious.

Types of tracks: what are your preferences?

When it comes to the types of tracks foreseen for the first test, the students seem to have clear ideas:

  • 39% opt for the type B: the argumentative theme on various fields, from the artistic to the social.
  • 36% prefer the topical theme, the so-called type C.
  • Finally, the analysis of the text in verse or prose – type A – collects 25% of the preferences.

The emotions of the exam in one word

Closing the survey, Studenti.it asked the final year students to summarize their emotions with respect to the exam in a single word.
The answers were a mix of sensations: anxiety, stress, panic, but also feelings of growth, achievement, importance, emotion and beauty.
