The Musicians of Caravaggio on display at the Palazzo Zevallos in Naples, on loan from the Metropolitan of New York.
The Intesa San Paolo Foundation, in this case for the Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano of Naples, continues the activity of exchanging works with the most important international museums, hosting paintings of exceptional value from time to time. 6 from May to July 23 2017 it will be the turn of "I Musici" by Caravaggio, on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
On the other hand, the Martyrdom of St. Ursula, the last painting by Caravaggio, exhibited in the exhibition “Caravaggio's Last Two Paintings” and which is generally kept in the Palazzo Zevallos, went to the New York Museum, again temporarily.
Free entry
In the days 6 and 7 May there will be thefree entry at Palazzo Zevallos to visit the exhibition on Caravaggio. The May 6, from 10.00 14.00 to and from the 18.00 20.00 you can admire the painting for free, since the event is part of the Sky Art Festival. The 7 may, however, you will not pay the entrance ticket to visit all the collections since i State museums will be free for the first Sunday of the month.
The Musicians of Caravaggio
The work was made in 1595 and was most likely the first painted for Cardinal Francesco Maria Bourbon Del Monte. It is configured as a 'allegory of Music and Love, personified by the figure of Cupid who holds a bunch of grapes in his hand and should not be understood as the representation of a contemporary concert.
In the opinion of all the critics, instead, the cornetto player is Caravaggio's self-portrait.
