The merchant of Venice it is included in the project of the Galleria Toledo theater dedicated to the Elisabettiano Theater, carried out in these years with the staging of works drawn, for the most part, from the Shakespearean repertoire.
Set in the 16th century Venice, a Renaissance city with an already capitalist structure and a world of commerce, trade, trade and money, the story has as its protagonist Shylock, a wealthy Jewish moneylender who lends money to Bassanio, to make possible the courtship of Portia, rich heiress of Belmonte.
But Shylock is only a guarantor of Antonio, dear friend of Bassanio to whom, however, can not lend money, since he has invested all his money in maritime traffic. The debt guarantee is in one absurd pact, accepted initially for mockery but which will then really come to the showdown: in the event that Antonio will not be able to repay the debt he will be forced to pay with a pound of meat from his body.
Key character of the story will be Portia, that disguising himself as a lawyer, will manage to save Antonio from the cruel outcome of the pact and to bring down the defeat on Shylock.
