On stage at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples the show "Itis Galileo", written, directed and performed by Marco Paolini on Galileo Galilei

Marco Paolini he writes, directs and interprets the scientist Galileo Galilei in his show Itis Galilei, on stage at New Theater of Naples from 18 to 23 February 2014.

So we return to talk about the greatest scientist of all time, his genius but also his contradictions and doubts, which he had until his death, in a show that takes its name "Itis" from the acronym of State Industrial Technical Institute, because it was born in schools to explain to young people how, sometimes, being brilliant can become a problem.

For the first time, it no longer investigates the traditional dialectic between faith and reason, inherent in the personality of Galileo, but on the three-way discussion between faith, reason and superstition. Yes, because although our age is dominated by reason and science, while Galileo had to fight to impose his own scientific method in an era dominated by certainties and rigidity of thought, today we go back to reading the horoscope, to rely on what the stars and astrology "say" about our past, present and future.

We live in a time when magic has returned to rule the future. It will be because the laws of economics are not mathematical laws and contain a very relevant case component, the fact is that our world seeks consolation in the stars. And it amazes me that, 400 years after the consecration of the Copernican postrivolution universe, every day many of us consult the predictions of the horoscope that use the fixed stars of Ptolemy. In the end it does not matter if the sky is not like that, because what matters is that we like it.

Galileo is often used as a symbol of free science against the fundamentalist faith, but in reality it is one that also makes horoscopes. Yet it has the strength to look beyond. For us it is easy to mock theories of the past, when theories end up they always make people laugh. The problem is that while you are in it, you continue to think that it is not theory, but an explanation of reality.

Why did science disappoint? Has reason lost its appeal? The goal of Marco Paolini in proposing to the public Itis Galileo is to reason, ask questions, and not allow viewers to relax. To go on stage is not a trivial sight on the historical figure of Galielo Galilei, but a dialogue that calls into question its constant relevance and its omnipresence today as yesterday.
