The Girolamini Library in Naples reopens to the public after 10 years: thousands of precious books

In Naples a beautiful novelty, after ten years of closure, the Library of Girolamini located in Monumental complex of the Church of the Girolamini in the historic center of the city, it will soon reopen to the public.

We recall in fact that in 2012 due to the devastation and the sacking of precious volumes, the Library was subjected to seizure by the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Naples.

To date, the structure is no longer under seizure and for the occasion it has arrived in Naples Dario Franceschini, the Minister for Culture, with the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi and the former prosecutor Giovanni Melillo.

The theft and restart of the Girolamini Library

As previously stated, in 2012, the Library was robbed of about 4 thousand unique and precious volumes, for a damage of approx 20 million euro. For this event, the former director Marino Massimo De Caro was definitively convicted. In total, six people are accused of stealing, hiding and reselling about two thousand books, of which only a part has been found.

Soon the Library will reopen to the public and are visible among the shelves many empty spaces, where many of the stolen books were found. To date, the structure wants to restart also thanks to the resources, the MiC has in fact allocated 20 million euro for the recovery and safety of the entire complex.

In short, a very special piece of news that will allow citizens to regain possession of a precious asset, which will be usable again approximately 180 thousand pieces, including 137 musical printed matter, 5 thousand editions of the sixteenth century, 120 incunabula, 10 thousand rare and valuable editions, 485 periodicals and then again microfilms, portraits.
