The errors in Napoleon: what never happened in reality
Despite the general acclaim, Napoleon was not free from criticism, especially with regards to historical fidelity. Some enthusiasts and scholars have raised doubts on certain aspects of the film that would not coincide with the documented historical events. Discrepancies that range from the representation of battles, to the clothes, up to the interpersonal dynamics between the characters.
Here are some aspects of the film that deviate significantly from historical reality:
- Origins and achievements: Contrary to what the film suggests, Napoleon did not emerge from nowhere, he came from a family of Tuscan nobility and grew up in comfortable conditions in Corsica. Moreover, despite his numerous victories, Great Britain remained an unattainable conquest for him.
- Age of Napoleon: The casting of Joaquin Phoenix, at age 47, to play Napoleon raises questions about historical accuracy, given that Napoleon was much younger during key events in his life.
- Marie Antoinette: The film portrays Marie Antoinette in a combative manner before her execution, while historically she was in a state of great vulnerability.
- Presence of Napoleon at the execution of Marie Antoinette: The film mistakenly insinuates that Napoleon was present at the queen's execution, when in reality he was away, engaged in the siege of Toulon.
- Representation of Joséphine: The age discrepancy between the protagonists and some details of his appearance, such as the state of his teeth, have been criticized.
- Battles and strategies: Scenes like that of the cannon fired at the Pyramids are the result of pure invention, far from documented historical events.
Ridley Scott responded to criticism by highlighting his commitment to historical fidelity, while conceding the need for some speculation for narrative reasons.
Criticisms of Napoleon
One of the criticisms came from the very famous popularizer, historian and university professor Alessandro Barbero, as well as by many historians who they are horrified faced with some errors, first of all the one relating to the cannonade on the pyramids, which never occurred.
Yet, it is important to remember that Napoleon it is proposed as an artistic interpretation of the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, mixing historical facts with elements of fiction to explore new perspectives on his character and his time. A creative freedom that, although it may generate debates about historical accuracy, helps to create a more engaging and personal story.
