Two shows at the Nuovo Teatro Sanità to pay homage to the Neapolitan dramatist Manlio Santanelli for his 80 years.
The celebrated Neapolitan playwright Manlio Santanelli will turn 80 on February 11th, and to mark the occasion, the Nuovo Teatro Sanità in Naples will pay homage to him with a week of events dedicated to his theater.
The event will begin on Wednesday 7 February 2018 with the show Processo a un autore – Manlio Santanelli alla sbarra, and will continue over the weekend, from 9 to 11 February 2018, with the debut of an unpublished text by Manlio Santanelli, entitled Domanda di desiderio.
Here follows in detail the information related to both events that will be held in the frame of the New Health Theater, in the heart of the characteristic district of Naples.
Trial to an author - Manlio Santanelli at the bar
On Wednesday 7 February 2018 at 20:30 pm , the Nuovo Teatro Sanità will host the Trial of an Author , which will see Manlio Santanelli “in the dock”, undergoing a trial on his work as a playwright, conducted by Edgardo Bellini and Mario Gelardi, in the role of public prosecutors.
Actors Federica Aiello, Roberto Azzurro, Fabio Cocifoglia, Marina Confalone, Isa Danieli, Michele Danubio, Gea Martire, and Nello Mascia will testify on his behalf, reviewing key works from Santanelli's dramaturgy, such as Emergency Exit, Queen Mother, Aberration of the Fixed Stars , and My Heart in Your Hands . Some of his short stories adapted for the stage will also be read, such as The Venus of Earthquakes , staged by Roberto Azzurro.
The evening will close with a short preview of the show Domanda di desiderio , an unpublished text by Santanelli, produced by Nuovo Teatro Sanità.

Request for desire, an unpublished text by Manlio Santanelli
On Friday 9 February 2018 at 21 pm , Question of Desire will debut , an unpublished text by Manlio Santanelli , produced by Nuovo Teatro Sanità, starring Federica Aiello and Michele Danubio and directed by Mario Gelardi ; the costumes are by Alessandra Gaudioso, the lighting by Alessandro Messina.
The show will be repeated on Saturday 10 February 2018 at 21pm and Sunday 11 February at 18pm.
Question of Desire focuses on the married life of Tommaso and Emilia , a middle-aged couple desperately seeking new stimuli to advance their relationship. After a lunch like any other, a strange request will break into their routine : an old schoolmate of hers asks for permission to desire her.
Mario Gelardi , the show's director, explained the text with these words: "What else but fantasy can renew the interest between the two? What else but play and irony can bring color back to life in a couple that seems a little dull ? Santanelli's writing here becomes fast and bounces between the two characters, just like a crazy ping-pong ball. A true musical phrasing like a Mozart opera."
