The square

Piazza Sisto Riario Sforza consists of a small stretch of the historic center of Naples that can be crossed along via dei Tribunali, the ancient major decumanus from the Greek period, and which is located near the Cathedral of Naples.

The name of the square is due to the Cardinal Sisto Riario Sforza.

The monuments

The fifteenth century Palazzo Caracciolo, erected by the Caracciolo of Gioiosa Ionica, built in splendid durazzesche forms and dominated by a sumptuous Catalan portal, overlooking the square.

The widening is dominated by the splendid obelisk of San Gennaro which, dedicated to the patron saint of Naples following the eruption of the 1631 Vesuvius, was built by the architect Cosimo Fanzago which conceived for the first time this new type of urban furniture.
