The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary rises in the place of an older chapel dedicated to Santa Maria dell'Idria, later probably dedicated to the Nativity of Mary.

Around the end of the XIII century, within the Angioini Registers, the title of Sancta Maria de Pedegripta.
The church that will be swept away by tsunami of the 1343 and replaced by a larger structure whose construction is linked to the legend according to which the Virgin appeared to Maria di Durazzo, to the hermit blessed Peter and to the monk Benedict with the request for the building of a church in that place in his name.

The new building, consecrated in the 1353, has since always been a place of intense popular devotion through parades, parades and the feast of the Madonna (7-8 September) with related ceremonies and pilgrimages.
