The Geoeventi calendar in Naples and Campania for the Planet Earth Week

La Planet Earth Week takes place every two years in Italy in October and includes a series of events aimed at popular awareness on the protection of our planet.

The purpose of this initiative is mainly to to spread the geological culture, respect for the environment, care for the territory, but also to promote the enormous and priceless heritage present in our country. Heritage which, in addition to being artistic and monumental, is primarily geological and environmental and, for this reason, must be enhanced and promoted from a tourist point of view.

With Planet Earth Week we want to achieve these and other objectives through a series of named appointments Geoeventi. Through these initiatives we also want to make known to the participants the fundamental role that the Geosciences they play in the protection of the territory and in research and scientific discovery.

The 2014 edition will take place 12 from October to 19 and in Naples and in the rest of Campania there will be a rich calendar of events that includes excursions on the ground, walks in urban and historical centers, doors open to museums, guided tours, exhibitions, educational activities, experimental laboratory activities for children and teenagers, musical and artistic activities, convivial tastings, conferences, conventions, workshops, round tables.

The island of Capri

Geoevents in Naples and Province

Guided visits to the Museum Center of Natural and Physical Sciences

The visits will be carried out in the Museums of Anthropology, Mineralogy and Paleontology of the Museums Center of Natural and Physical Sciences according to the following program:

From Monday 13 to Friday 17 October - Visits to the temporary exhibition and 2 laboratory activities on:
1. Rocks, minerals and technology of prehistoric artifacts;
2. Minerals and prehistoric art
Wednesday 15 October - 11.00 hours: Seminar on stone chipping techniques at the Real Mineralogical Museum.
Saturday 18 October - 10.00 hours: Seminars on the application of minerals and natural rocks, at the Real Mineralogical Museum.
Saturday 18 October - 11.30 hours: Walk to discover the natural rocks used for the construction of buildings in the Old Center of Naples.

Discovering Capri

The Museo del Centro Caprense offers a journey through the rocks, fossils, minerals and plants of the beautiful island of Capri.

Programme:
Sunday 12 October 2014 at 11:00 the Ignazio Cerio Museum awaits you in its rooms to inaugurate the Planet Earth Week with a “GeoAperitivo at the Museum”.

Monday 13 October from 10:30 to 12:30 primary and secondary school students of I degree will be able to take on the role of "Little Paleontologists" with the observation of fossil organisms hidden in our rocks, and the creation of plaster casts of fossil shells.

On Tuesday 14 October from 10:30 to 12:30 the Museum staff will lead the younger generations to the “Discovery of the Minerals of the Cerio Collection”.

Wednesday 15 October from 10:30 to 12:30 “Budding botanists” primary and secondary school students of I degree to discover the flora of Capri.

Thursday 16 October from 10: 00 to 13: 00 Excursion in direct contact with nature for students of fourth and fifth grade and middle school.

On Friday 17 October from 10:30 to 12:30 “Prehistoric Capri” the students will make a trip to prehistoric Capri, drawing and painting on pebbles.

Saturday 18 October from 10 to 14 "The sea in the mountains: history of 200.000 years ago" Excursion to the forts, addressed to adults.
The route has an average level of difficulty and a length of 2,5 km. Packed breakfast is provided.
For the excursion we recommend suitable equipment: shoes with shaped and non-slip soles, clothing must be comfortable so as not to hinder movements.

Our troubled land: a heart of fire, a flow of water (Pozzuoli)

The topic of geothermics will be explored in the super volcano of the Flegrei fields and the Termalismo in Campania.

Discovering the volcanoes of Bacoli - "Campi Flegrei"

SI will explore the themes of volcanism with excursions and conferences.

Excursion: Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October
09: 00-10: 30 Stufe di Nerone (Lucrino). Thermalism and local volcanic structures
10: 45-13: 00 Naval Base Guard of Finance Miseno. Crater of Porto Miseno. Visit to the sulfur cave with boat. Fumarolic maniefstations, gas composition, mineralization.
13: 00-14: 00 Break - breakfast in Miseno
14: 00-15: 00 Capo Miseno's Eruptive Center
15: 00-16: 30 Transfer to Poggio di Bacoli. Crater of Bacoli and Punta Pennata.
16: 30-18: 30 Transfer to the headquarters of the Phlegraean Fields Natural Park in Via Bellavista (Bacoli). Observations on the craters of the Fondi Baia. Archaeological Park of the Terme di Baia. End of the excursion.

The Tour of the Grand Cone of Vesuvius, in the footsteps of Giuseppe Mercalli

Events to remember the memory of prof. Giuseppe Mercalli on the centenary of his death (1850 - 1914)

Programme:
Circular route on the Great Cone of Vesuvius starting from the square at an altitude of 1000 and crossing the crater rim counterclockwise from the western side, descending along the south-eastern side and closing the itinerary at the starting point. Packed breakfast. Mountain footwear and layered hiking clothing are recommended.
