After the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of Neapolitan New Year 's traditions returns : the New Year's Eve dive in Naples, the so-called winter cimento .

This custom dates back about 10 years as a superstitious ritual to end and begin the new year on the best possible footing. The tradition is based on the strong popular belief that water , being purifying , gives us the energy to face life. Its origins appear to be in the Netherlands in 1960, where some swimmers decided to start the year with a swim in the sea at Scheveningen.

It arrived in Naples in 2012 thanks to Christian Avallone and Roberto Di Maio, who have been involved in volunteer work and blood donation for years.

Appointment at Mappatella Beach on New Year's Day

The 2023 event will take place on January 1st at 12:00 pm at the so-called “Mappatella Beach”, near the Rotonda Diaz.

Here the citizens will gather to dive into the sea together, in order to prove themselves courageous through an "icy" dive which at the same time, however, is a practice accessible to all and which can be lived in a carefree way.
