A 'Chiena is the Water Festival, which every year refreshes the streets of the town of Campagna (SA) with buckets and water games. From 27 July to 17 August 2013
The heat is becoming increasingly oppressive and reaching the sea is not always possible? In the small town of Countryside (SA) immersed in the Sele plain, every year, during the summer weekends, there is a special and cool event to which one can not miss: A 'Chiena, The Water Festival.
This mountain municipality, in fact, is crossed by the Tenza river, a tributary of the Sele, which for years has inspired a kind of "ritual", which has become a regular summer appointment, the Water Festival, better known as A 'Chiena ("Flood" of the river). The event consists of the divert the river Tenza and flood the streets of the historic center of Campagna with water, to refresh residents, visitors and tourists, on fixed days and times.
The party is held every weekend in July and August and has the climax the 16 and 17 August when it is scheduled "Midnight bucket". Citizens and visitors, in fact, during the days of the Chiena, wear swimsuits and throw water balloons and buckets of water. In this way the highly anticipated summer event, during which everyone takes to the streets to spend a few hours in complete carefree, becomes even more playful and fun, with improvised water games to find refreshment.
Le origins of the Chiena they are very ancient, dating back to the 600s, when during the plague it was decided to eradicate the virus of the disease by diverting the river Tenza to exploit the purity of its waters, letting them flow through all the streets of the city. A tradition that has been maintained over the centuries to become a real event that involves locals but also visitors from all over the region.
The 2013 edition of Chiena is held from the 13 July to the 16 August and, as every year, it will be flanked by manifestations artistic and gastronomic, such as festivals, tastings of local products, art exhibitions, markets and craft fairs, theatrical and musical performances, artistic performances.
