On 30 August and 1 September 2021 the usual appointment with the Byzantine New Year takes place in Amalfi, a much awaited and loved event that includes cultural initiatives and events

Every year Amalfi, and also Atrani with some events, celebrates this anniversary which coincides with the beginning of the fiscal and legal year at the time of the Eastern Roman Empire when Amalfi was an autonomous city in suburbs. A very important and glorious phase for the town and that every year we want to recall with great celebrations.

Generally, in full medieval atmosphere, the Procession with pages, ladies and knights, but this year the event will be in contained form for health issues and the parade will not be organized, but there will be moments of reflection.

There will also be theinvestiture of the Magister, a recognition that is awarded every year to a personality of Amalfi, either by birth or by adoption, who is particularly distinguished in the city for specific merits in important sectors of the ancient medieval city.

The Byzantine New Year is organized by the Municipality of Amalfi with the Municipality of Atrani and the Amalfi Culture and History Center.

August 31th

On August 31 at 20:00, in Largo Duchi Piccolomini, there will be the round table "Protecting Beauty", by the Center of Culture and History of Amalfi, where we will talk about coexistence between man and nature in the Divine area.

At 21: 00, theinterview with the new magister of Civiltà Amalfitana, chosen for its merits in the field of study and prevention of hydrogeological risk in an environment heavily damaged, even recently, by landslides and floods. This investiture is also a tribute to the Civil Protection machine that has worked so hard in these territories.

The Magister is the geologist Italo Giulivo, head of the Regional Civil Protection. There investiture ceremony will be in Atrani on September 1st at 19:00 in the atrium of the Palatine Chapel of San Salvatore de 'Birecto.
