Sunday June 12 2022 at 10:00 there will be a really important appointment or the Commemoration at the Fort of Vigliena, on the occasion of the celebration of the anniversary of the fall. The event is open to all and is organized by the Civic Committee of San Giovanni a Teduccio.
The history of the Forte di Vigliena
Il Forte di Vigliena is a historic building located in the neighborhood of San Giovanni a Teduccio, precisely at Stradone Vigliena, 15. To date, only a few remains of the national monument remain and every year a truly important event is celebrated, the commemoration of Martyrs of the Fort of Vigliena.
The building was built around 1702, on the orders of Viceroy Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, Marquis of Villena. Later it was used in the Kingdom of the two Sicilies to educate the cadets of the military academy of the Nunziatella to the artillery.
The episode for which the Forte di Vigliena is known to most people dates back to June 13, 1799, day when there was the destruction of the building and the death of 150 men.
The story saw the supporters of the Neapolitan Republic and Sanfedist forces of Cardinal Ruffo. The structure was defended by about 150 men of the Calabrian Legion, who were attacked by three Calabrian Sanfedist battalions and then hit by Russian artillery fire.
At this point, now surrounded, they decided to blow up the arsenal, and due to the explosion there was the death of men and the semi-destruction of the Fort of Vigliena.
