The Macellum dates back to I-II century AD and is characterized by a square plan surrounded by a portico. The ancient Roman shops overlook it, while on the sides of the apse there are two latrines.

There are also gods remains of stairs leading to what was once the upper floor, while in the center there is an elevated circular construction that was surrounded by column and on whose podium it was possible to climb through four stairways.

È one of the most intact ancient markets also thanks to the phenomenon of bradyseism which over time has preserved many parts submerged by water.

Currently it is improperly called the Temple of Serapis since it was found there statue of the Egyptian god of the same name in 1750, during the first excavations. For this reason it was believed that it was a temple, but it was later established that it is an ancient market.
