The Luminaria di San Domenico in Praiano, a marvel on the Amalfi Coast

The beautiful Luminaria di San Domenico returns to Praiano , on the Amalfi Coast, from July 30th to August 4th 2022 , a traditional event loved by locals and tourists that always attracts huge crowds.

The event takes place primarily in Piazza San Gennaro, but also in other squares and streets, where thousands of torches, candles, and tealights are lit , forming a marvelous display of illuminations that will leave us speechless.

The Luminaria di San Domenico is a popular festival with ancient origins , dedicated to commemorating Saint Dominic. It is believed that the festival originated in the early 1600s with the arrival of the Dominican friars in Naples.

Thousands of lights in the square

To bring this evocative celebration to life, hundreds of volunteers organize candle, tealight, and torch stations, then light them. This way, the terraces, windows, courtyards, and gardens of Praiano come to life and light up.

The program of the Luminaria di San Domenico

30th July

In Piazza Antico Seggio and Piazza San Luca, the " Waiting for the Lights " event will take place at 21:30 PM. Countless candles will be strung all the way to Piazza San Luca, decorating drawings made by residents. The theme is Nature.

31th July

The opening night will take place in Piazza San Gennaro at 22:30 PM with Orakel, Compagnia Opera Fiamme. Fire will create a unique spectacle featuring dance, acrobatics, and special effects. Admission is permitted until 22:00 PM.

From 1st August to 3rd August

In Piazza San Gennaro, starting at 21:30 PM, the event " La Tradizione " (Tradition) will take place. With the ringing of the bells of the Church of Santa Maria a Castro-Convent of San Domenico and the Church of San Gennaro , candles will be lit in the square, on the convent, and on the houses of Praiano. There will also be Video Mapping and the Opera Flora event, with artists creating installations in the square that represent the warmth of fire and the magic of floral forms.

August 4th

In Piazza San Gennaro at 21:30 pm, for the last evening, the Luminaria Boys will illuminate the square with the flame carried by the Parish Priest of the Parish of San Gennaro VM. There will be 3000 candles installed on the majolica decoration of Piazza San Gennaro.

Every evening from 1 to 3 August, in the Church of San Gennaro, the cycle of preparatory triduum prayers:

• at 19:30 Holy Rosary
• at 20:00 Holy Mass
